Who could imagine that, just off a road in Languedoc, amid vineyards and historic villages, nine centuries of history would come into view? This royal priory brings together two architectural styles that seem worlds apart: a 12th-century Romanesque church and a sumptuous 18th-century main residence, whose refinement evokes a princely home. The listed Historic Monument comprises approximately 6,000 m² of buildings set within a 41-hectare estate.
In the Hérault department, at the heart of a landscape of hills and vineyards, the property is conveniently located: Béziers and its high-speed train station are around 30 minutes away, Montpellier Airport is 45 minutes away, and the coast is less than 45 minutes away.
The priory is arranged around a spacious courtyard of honour, framed by two wings and a main residence rising over three floors. On the garden side, a long classical façade overlooks a series of terraces connected by majestic stone staircases. A wrought-iron balustrade with rocaille detailing, flowerbeds, an Anglo-Chinese garden and a cypress grove complete the composition.
Founded in the 11th century by a community of canons, the priory prospered, enabling the construction of its Romanesque church in the 12th century. In 1755, the canons began an almost complete reconstruction of their establishment. Approved by Louis XV, the project lasted nearly thirty years and gave rise to architecture worthy of the Age of Enlightenment: harmoniously arranged façades, sculpted decoration, vaulted galleries and grand staircases.
Inside, the Great Gallery offers a remarkable perspective, while the grand staircase retains its wrought-iron balustrade. On the principal floor, a suite of reception rooms opens onto the terraces and gardens. An entrance hall, reception rooms, a state bedroom, and summer and winter dining rooms create a layout befitting an aristocratic residence.
Today, the estate combines restored areas with spaces still awaiting a new purpose. Its architecture, scale and outbuildings lend themselves to a range of projects: a private residence, cultural venue, hospitality or events, subject to the necessary permissions. Further work is required, particularly on the floors of the main residence.
